As always, there were so many amazing events this past month, and there are many more to come in July. For example, WSN, or Women’s Support Network of York Region, has and are going to host many events such as the #thatgirl move-a-thon, and so much more! Here are a couple notable events from June and July.
WSN Events
Women’s Support Network of York Region, is York Regions sexual violence and rape crisis service center. They are dedicated to providing people whose experienced sexual violence with free, confidential help. Throughout the month of June, they’ve hosted events such as Wise Women Expressive Arts Circle, Survivors Speak, Short Story Creative Writing Workshop, and so much more to help survivors overcome their mental challenges from the trauma they’ve faced. Right now, they’re hosting a #that girl move-a-thon to raise money to end sexual violence. For more information, you can visit their website here!
Canada Day Celebration
Since 1867, when the country Canada was first established, we’ve celebrated Canada Day by admiring our past leaders that helped raise Canada to the global stage as an independent country. However, we have yet to truly acknowledge that all we have today was from the cruel, heartless killing and torture of the Indigenous Peoples. Youth Leaders of York Region believes that we should always remember both the good and the bad of confederation; “While many of these exciting celebrations are done without ill intention, the celebration of confederation represents the commemoration of ignorance to the suffering and unfair treatment of the people who were isolated and condemned during the founding of Canada.” So let’s not forget that Canada was built off of the homes of others this Canada day and acknowledge the struggles of the Indigenous Peoples.
All in all June has been a great month in terms of events hosted, and I’m sure there will be many more come July and August!
